Ay dios mio — I found it. We found it. The creme de la creme (the salsa de la salsa?). THE Mexican spot in Philadelphia. Sorry Los Gallos — Blue Corn is the Taste official top Mexican joint in Philadelphia. That’s right. #1. Numero uno. Enough Spanish for me (I got a 2 on the AP exam. Dustin cheated on it, but that’s a review for another time).
NGL: We were apprehensive — it’s a well known IG girlie spot. How will the walls of our local Mexican joint persevere against the tides of gentrification?
Answer: immaculately. The inside was lovely — clean but homely. The type of place where you pucker your lips, nod in agreement, and think: I’m bout to *** this shit UP.
We got their special — a ceviche — and I literally had that out of body experience (think that scene in ratatouille when the taster guy gets a nostalgic blast to his mom’s cooking). This was Mexican ceviche, to be sure, but it reminded me of my folks, of my time in Korea. They’re from the coast, and prepare their ceviche very similarly. It was insane. It tasted so good. Still tasturbating to it.
The other dishes were omelette varieties. Elena (BARRERA-Waters… she got da pass) is the bean pro — she can tell from the quality of the beans how Mexican the place is. This one valid. Passed with flying colors. Aesthetic dishes, too (ngl I could not care less about that).
If you’re in Philly and wanting to see what’s up — make the drive down to South Philly, grab some Blue Corn, hit Jim’s Water Ice, and explore the Italian Market. You won’t be disappointed. Passayunk Square, Philadelphia South Philadelphia, Philadelphia
