Coal-fired pizza is THE BEST! Got the Margherita and absolutely loved it. We did takeout and waited less than 20 mins.

modern! the ugly duckling in the big 3 of the new haven pizza world in my opinion. but that’s not a bad place to be considering sally’s and pepe’s are some of the best in the nation. modern does a really good pie but it just isn’t on par with the other two. in past visits I was overwhelmed with the amount of cheese but this time they seemed to have dialed it back. still cheesier than the others but not an insane amount. we were planning on going to sally’s but the line was over 2 hours there so we audibled here and only had to wait 45 minutes :) crust was solid and they seem to be more apprehensive to char here than the other new haven spots. sauce was great and toppings were good. overall, I think modern does a safer pie that leans a bit more traditional. it might be the better choice for those not familiar with the char and thinner style of a new haven slide, but I think the lack of these characteristics prevents it from reaching the heights of sally’s or pepe’s on a good day. the faults of modern are not its own however. again, it only falters since it competes with sally’s and pepe’s just down the road. in any other city or state it would easily be the best pie in town. also, many prefer modern and rank it their favorite off the big 3. personally though, I think it’s a two horse race between sally’s and pepe’s with modern a distant third.
