Din Tai Fung
Feb 23
1633 Broadway
â—Ź
9.3
Din Tai Fung is more than a universal name at this point and its reputation is reflected through the food. The dumplings are amazing and the ambiance ties it all together. On a personal note, the only halal-friendly options are the vegan ones, a hit or miss. I wasn’t a fan of most of the dumplings including the vegan dumplings and buns. But, the redemption was made through the spicy vegan wontons and noodles, and they carried more flavor than most things. The star of the show is the chocolate dumping that you MUST have with sea-salt cold foam; it will take you through an experience that is unforgettable. It feels as though you are biting into a Kinder Bueno, waiting for the hazelnut cream to burst on your tongue. Balanced with a perfect chewy wrapping and saltiness, it should be the sole reason you visit the restaurant.

Miraj Healthy Grill

For me a warm comfort meal means a flavorful kabob and fragrant rice, all of which consist in Miraj’s menu. From the warm welcome to the organized prayer rooms in the back, an applaud isn’t enough. Me and my friend smelled their meat slow cooking from a block down! True to their name and their hospitality, if you are nearby then this place shouldn’t be ignored. This is very controversial, but the kabobs were better than the ones from Ravagh.

Birria LES

This may be a little appreciation post since everyone already knows my love for Birria LES— in Williamsburg specifically. But, I was around the lower east side and remembered that they recently released birria dumplings. If you know me then you know that I will go wherever I hear of dumplings or momos. It was amazing to say the least. My one and only request is that they should higher the quantity of the dumplings in an order; 5 dumplings aren’t a respectable amount considering the consome to dumpling ratio.

Sawada Coffee

I think it would be unfair and even disrespectful to ignore this cozy coffee spot. It is truly one of a kind, not because it is hidden in an alley, and a place to easily get a few readings done. I was drawn to their signature syrup, a Tokyo-style bean paste; it can be added to any drink of your choice, although it is recommended for lattes and cold brews. In my not so spontaneous choice, I chose a hot latte. Within 5 minutes, the latte art and drink seemingly evaporated from my cup. Safe to say, it is one of my favorite places now. It can be quite nosy due to the restaurant on the left side as you enter, but I seemingly toned it out.

I heard of Hen House from Muslim foodies and decided to give it a try. It wasn’t an entirely disappointing place. Although some items on the menu could be skipped, the chicken sandwich is a must! It is filled with pickled coleslaw/radish and a house-made sauce— it was delicious.

Take it cheesy

Recently went to “Take it Cheesy.” It is the kind of place that you only visit once and call it a day. Nothing on the menu would necessarily rock your mind; instead it will perhaps might give you heartburn. One of the items I was ecstatic to try was the momos— not the Cheetos one— and they turned out to be the same frozen ones that I have at home. Overall, the customer service was nice, but I wouldn’t make a drive out to Hicksville for this.
