Aptly named, Kahlo does well to establish itself as a “Mexican” restaurant. While the ingredients were Mexican inspired, the flavors were far from anything Mexican. The guac, served with a chili oil and diced mangoes (definitely very Mexican!) tasted kinda just like avocado and mangoes. There was this side that was served in little tortilla chips, hard to taste anything else but the overpowering lime. The octopus with potatoes was ok, cooked to perfection but lacked any flavor. I got the fillet mignon in chile ancho sauce and mashed potatoes. Had to ask for a spicy sauce on the side that saved the dish cause my tastebuds were begging for flavor. The desserts were also nothing to write home about. Again, aptly named, like Kahlo who’s appropriation and use of indigenous culture for her identity was performative or artistic at best, this restaurant serves food for pretty much just anyone who happens to google Mexican food at Hudson yards lol.
