pre-christmas pizza lunch with my brothers and cousin. this year, we went to pepe’s in stamford. a bit about frank pepe’s. originally in new haven, this spot is consistently in the top 10 in pizza rankings not just for the state but for the entire nation. the big 3 of the new haven pizza scene (one of the best pizza cities, dare I say best, in the usa) is pepe’s, sally’s, and modern. not to say other spots aren’t top notch but these are the three that commonly come to mind when discussing apizza. comparing the three original locations in new haven (pepe’s and sally’s have opened multiple locations across other cities) my favorite is sally’s, then pepe’s, then modern. sally’s and pepe’s are very close in my mind, however I find sally’s to be more consistent particularly in regard to crust thickness (which often is a bit too thick at pepe’s). more on modern in a later review. now, all that being said: while the branch locations of pepe’s may not be exactly as good as the new haven original, it is still an excellent pie. i’d probably rate it 0.5 points higher if it was the new haven location. this time we got some meat pies and the white clam. white clam is another new haven original and heavy on the garlic. it reminds me of a really good foccacia with clams instead of tomato. pepe’s kills it in the sauce department and the cheese is top notch as well. char was on point this time. crust was a bit inconsistent as mentioned before. my one qualm with pepe’s. highly recommend checking out the new haven location if you are ever in the area.
